The first international conference was opened in the assembly hall of the Eucharistic Congress at four o'clock yesterday afternoon.

Participants started to arrive

hours beforehand and the propor tion of foreigners was strikingly large. The Oriental vestments of Asiatic and the African churchman attracted much attention amongst the crowd, who cheered these ec- clesiastics on their arrival.

In the middle of a broad plat- form in the principal assembly hall stood the throne of Cardinal Pa- celli

and on either side of the, throne, seven velvet chairs of the Cardinals.

On their arrival the high digni taries were loudly cheered. Wife of Regent von Horthy, the Principal Patroness of the Congress, Premier Imredy and the Minister of Public Instruction, Count Teleky, entered with the fourteen Cardinals.

The Cardinal Secretary stated that Cardinal Pacelli, the Papal Legate, was prevented from takin, part, and for this reason the Bis- hop of Namur, Thomas Heyen, de- livered the opening speech.

Dr. Griebl, a former leader of Nazis in America, was an im- portant witness in the case but He is disappeared on May 10. alleged to have boarded the "Bremen" without a passport, and his wife professed to have no knowledge of his whereabouts.

Dr. Griebl arrived in Bremen

on May 21 on board the "Bremen" and, after paying a fine of 60 marks for breaking the German passport regulations, was freed.

CAPTAIN "QUÍZZED”

Federal agents swooped on the "Bremen" before she docked in New York on the return voyage last night, and subpoened the Master, Capt. Adolph Ahrens, and several members of the crew for questioning before a Grand Jury investigation into spying ac- tivities.

Capt. Ahrens is reported to have been subjected to long ques- tioning on board the "Bremen," after which he was taken to the office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, for further ques- tioning.

It is understood that Dr. Griebl was the subject of the en- quiries. Reuter.
