Chief Engineer:
N.T. WHITWORTH, B.Sc.(Tech.), C.Eng., M.I.C.E., M.I.Mun.E., M.I.W.E.
General
11.06 The Division controls, maintains and extends the fresh and salt water distribution systems and is responsible for the provision of supplies to consumers.
Mains Sub-Division
11.07 Extensions and improvements to fresh and salt water distribution systems were carried out to supply areas of new development and to meet the requirements of urban redevelopment schemes. The programme for replacement of undersized or defective mains and general distribution improvement continued. 51 miles of mains were laid during the year. Details are given in Appendix CC. With the commencement of water restrictions on the 24th September, all routine mains maintenance and waste detection work was suspended and personnel diverted to full-time valve operation duty. With the cessation of restrictions personnel resumed their normal duties on the 1st November.
11.08 Apart from the brief period of water restrictions, systematic waste detection continued throughout the year. Quarterly checks were carried out in 312 fresh water areas and annual checks in the 85 salt water areas. A number of major leaks were discovered and repaired, resulting in an estimated daily saving of more than five million gallons of water.
