They Came To Learn But Taught!

The South China Athletic Asso- ciation were last night hosts to the Federation Cochin-Chinoise de Football de Saigon, at a very en- joyable dinner at the Kam Ling Restaurant.

a

In the course of the evening, Mr. Leung Wing-chiu, captain of the South China team, presented souvenir flag to the captain of the visiting team.

After the usual toasts had been pro- posed, Mr. Mok Hing, acting chairman of the S.C.A.A., said:— ·

This year in Hong Kong, football It was not history has been made.

long ago that we gathered together to welcome the Islington Corinthians from England, and now, with the ex- citement of that visit barely subsideti, we are afforded the opportunity of wel- coming and entertaining our distin- guished visitors from Saigon.

It was about eight years ago that the my Association first undertook project of sending a team to tour the South Seas. Since then our football team has visited those shores at re- gular intervals, and on each of those occasions, Saigon has been included in their itinerary.

IMPROVED FOOTBALL

Football in Saigon has improved be yond recognition. When we first visit- ed Saigon, the game was then still in its infancy. The great improvement made in Saigon has, been borne out by the magnificient displays given by our visitors in the few exhibition matches they have played against the best lo- cal talent. They have proved indeed to be an all-conquering team.

of

Mr. Jean Michaud, our visitors' gen- ial manager; remarked rather modest- ly on his arrival that they had come to the Colony to learn the game football from us. On the contrary, they have proved to us that there is nothing that we can teach them. deed, there are many aspects of game in which we must be the pupils and not the masters.

In- the

Mr. Jean Michaud, manager of the visiting team, suitably replied thank- ing the South China Athletic Associa- tion for the hospitality rendered to his team, and speaking highly of the stan-- dard of football played locally.

Mr Wong Ka-tsun in proposing the toast to the guests said:

Mr Chairman and Gentlemen, The pleasant duty of proposing the toast of "our guests" to-night devol- ves upon me. It is indeed pleasant to have among us so many distinguished guests, including a number of Council members of the H.K.F.A., representa- tives of various Clubs.

The object of to-night's dinner is two-fold. The primary object is to do honour to our distinguished visitors from Saigon. Our second object is to celebrate the winning, by our Associa tion, of the Senior League Champion- ship, for the sixth time, as well as the Senior Challenge Shield, for the seventh time and the Kotewall .Cup Competi-

tion.

CLEAN SOCCER

We are happy to note that this year the game of football has been singu- larly free of ungentlemanly conduct, and we are happier still that, as a re- sult of keen, clean and friendly rivalry on the field of play, with members of other nationalities in Hong Kong, our Association has been able, as one of the leading athletic institutions in the Colony, to make a vital contribution towards the promotion of international friendship and understanding.

Whilst we can take particular pride in the success of our players, we must not forget that their success is due to our various foreign friends, who go freely and ungrudgingly gave of their best in helping and teaching them to play and improve their game, and to them, and all Chinese footballers in general, owe a deep debt of gratitude.

mannor

To the Press we are indebted for the publicity they have given on our be- half, and for their accurate reports of the matches and for their fair criticism. And lastly, we have to thank the in various reforces for the which they have handled all the games this season. They have done much to bring about the keen and fine sporting displays we have had the privilege to witness.

And now Gentlemen, I will ask you to rise and drink with me the health of our guests.

Mr. J. Skinner replied for the guests:
