How Good Are You?

Mr. Culbertson is conducting, through this column, an examina- tion of bridge players. Rate your- self by subtracting from 100 the points for each wrong answer. Yesterday's question was: Question 43: You are West, de- clarer at a three no trump contract, in rubber bridge. Your hand and dummy are as follows:

WEST

S.-J 8 4

H.-K Q 6 2 D.-A K 4 C-A 10-5

(

EAST [dummy]

S.- A-5 3 H.-A

D. J 10 9 7 2

C-7 6 3 2

North opened the heart jack. You must win with dummy's singleton ace. What card do you then lead from dummy, and what card do you play from your own hand?

Answer: You should lead the deuce of diamonds, disdaining the finesse, and play out your own ace and king, thus insuring four dia- mond tricks

while retaining the spade ace entry in dummy. To lead the diamond jack and finesse is bad play. If the finesse loses to North's queen he can lead a spade and re- move dummy's entry while the dia- mond suit still is blocked. If South had the diamond queen and three guards the finesse would succeed but, of course, South would not cover and the suit still would be blocked. [Two points demerit for failure to play the diamond suit as prescribed.]

that West. would have to win and {return a heart up to the acequeen tenace, or a diamond up to the king, East, however, jumped up with the spade queen and cashed the fourth spade. West co-operated nobly by keeping his three diamonds and blanking the heart king. East then returned the diamond nine and West, due to the fact that East had unblocked, was able to overtake and run three diamond tricks for

the defeat of the contract.
