Road Works in the New Territories

Both the provision of dual carriageway in Castle Peak Road between Tuen Mun and Ping Shan and the improvement of Lam Tei Road were completed. Planning commenced for the training of the streamcourse near Fu Tei to improve the drainage of the low lying areas on both sides of Castle Peak Road.

A Climbing Lane was constructed in Tai Po Road near the Hong Kong Chinese University, and planning continued on further road improvements between the University and Tai Po. The design was completed for a new railway bridge together with the re-alignment of Tai Po Road at M.S. 17. When constructed, this will remove the traffic 'bottleneck' at the constriction below the existing short span railway bridge over Tai Po Road.

Planning also continued for the Tsuen Wan By-pass between Kwai Chung Road and Texaco Road. In order to provide more industrial sites for development, design continued for new roads and drains in Areas 37B, 10H and 10G, and for a link road connecting these areas to Texaco Road. Site formation was completed for special industries in Area 26 Kwai Chung, and the construction of a new trunk sewer in Area 10H was started.

The new access road to the Stanley Training Centre at Lai Chi Kok and the new Lai Chi Kok Terrace Road were completed. The latter will join Tsuen Wan with the new Lai Chi Kok Hospital. Pedestrian movements over the busy Kwai Chung Road are facilitated by the completion of three footbridges at Area 29.

In the Sai Kung Peninsula, the section of Ma On Shan Road between Kei Leng Ha Lo Wai and Nai Chung was completed. To complete the loop connecting Sai Kung and Sha Tin around the south coast of Tolo Harbour, planning was in hand for the remainder of the road linking Nai Chung, Wu Kwai Sha and Siu Lek Yuen. Works were commenced for the Reconstruction of Hang Hau Road and planning for the improvement of Clear Water Bay Road between Anderson Road and Hirams Highway was nearly completed.

Tunnelling work for the Second Lion Road Tunnel proceeded as scheduled under the direction of Waterworks Office and the design of the carriageway and ancillary works for the tunnel by this Division was nearly completed.
