ISLAND IN ARCTIC OCEAN

Copenhagen, To-day. Dr. Lauge Koch, the well-known explorer, started out yesterday from King's Bay, Spitzbergen, in search of an unknown island which is believed to exist in the Arctic Ocean.

He will also visit Pearyland in the course of his ex-

plorations.

Dr. Koch, who arrived at King's Bay by air in April, believes that he sighted the phantom island be- tween North-East Greenland and the North Pole some two years ago when he was carrying out a series of exploratory flights, from North Greenland.

This unknown island was first heard of in during the 1906-8 Ex- pedition from North Greenland headed by the Danish explorer, Erichsen, who, with two other members of the party made a long sledge trip to Pearyland.

DIED OF HUNGER

All three members of the party died of hunger when they were unable to find their way back, but a rescue party found their bodies and their papers showed that they believed they had seen new land in the Arctic Ocean.

The Soviet airmen who flew over the North Pole to America last summer also reported sighting land between the North Pole and Greenland. Reuter.
