The Lai Chi Kok Compost Plant was reactivated during the year and 150 tons of compost were manufactured during the last quarter.

The plant at Kennedy Town Abattoir operated without trouble during the year. Towards the end of the year work associated with the installation of new equipment necessitated one pig killing line being shut down. This entailed 24-hour operation of the other line and consequently preventive maintenance had to be postponed.

The erection of the third pig-dressing line at Cheung Sha Wan Abattoir commenced at the beginning of the year; this necessitated the closure of one of the existing lines and reduced production to one line only. A new pig slaughtering line was also installed and modifications were made to the existing two lines.
Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Plant Sections

These Sections maintain all air conditioning and refrigeration plants including associated water pumps and chlorination equipment. At the end of the year 189 attended and automatic air conditioning and refrigeration plants totalling 9,976.60 tonnes of refrigeration were in operation. A further 145 air conditioning plants together with 53 refrigeration plants totalling 8,456.71 tonnes of refrigeration and 286 chilled water, sea-water pumps totalling 4,254.50 KW and 18 sets of chlorination equipment totalling 19.75 kg. per hour were jointly maintained by these and other Sections of the Office. In addition 12 air conditioning and refrigeration plants totalling 223.75 tonnes of refrigeration installed on Outlying Islands were maintained on behalf of these Sections by the Electrical Refrigerator and Room Cooler Section, Hong Kong.
Hong Kong International Airport Electrical and Mechanical Services Section

This Section maintains all the electrical, mechanical and air conditioning systems as well as the runway and landing approach lights, substation equipment, air navigation beacons, baggage conveyor systems and passenger aerobridges. All plant and equipment was maintained through the year without major breakdown. In addition to routine maintenance and overhaul of plant and equipment this Section carried out work connected with the Airport Development on behalf of the Design and Projects Division. Sixty metres of new cable was laid in connection with domestic lighting and power supply to the temporary Fire Station. Two thousand three hundred metres of cable were laid in connection with Visual Approach Slope Indicators at Runway 13 and, in addition, 48 isolating transformers and twelve sets of Indicators were installed and commissioned. Emergency generators installed in Sub-Stations, H, J, P and Q together with 11 KV switch panels, transformers and MV switch boards, domestic lighting and power systems were installed in the Apron Services Complex including a fire booster pump, floodlights and street lights. Air field light fittings and street lighting were installed on the Eastern Access Road. Domestic lighting power system and air-conditioning systems were commissioned at the 747 Piers and Bus Docks of aircraft Parking Bays Nos. 3 and 4. As this Office's High Pressure Injection testing apparatus is normally retained at the Airport this Section undertook the inspection and primary injection tests of 18 air current breakers ranging from 300 amps to 3,000 amps for use in Housing Authority Estates and Military Establishments.
