Fourth Extra Race Meeting

MOST OF NINE EVENTS OVER SPRINT DISTANCE

MESSRS. V. V. NEEDA & H. P. CHANSON LEAVE FOR SHANGHAI

(By "RAPIER")

The Fourth Extra Race Meeting of the Hong Kong Jockey Club will be held to-morrow and will consist of a varied programme of nine races, the majority of which are over sprint distances. It is interesting to note that not one race will be contested beyond a mile. Entries again are most satisfactory, and with the best among the Australian and China ponies debarred from racing, it will be no easy task to make the right nominations.

Given favourable weather con- ditions, and with the track the hard side, some fast times should be returned. Mr. V. V. Needa returned to Shanghai last week, and I have no information as to whether he will be return- ing. I understand that Mr. H. P. Chanson has also gone back to Shanghai.

These two ponies clashed in "All Out" Stakes, at the First Ex- tra Race Meeting over the same dis- tance. On that occasion Oak Bay was ridden by Mr. Proulx, and it was due to his superior riding that en- -abled-the-latter to win by a short

In the circumstances, therefore, recommend Gladiator as the winner, and I believe that this time it will justify the confidence of the betting public.

With Mr. Encarnacaó up Oak Bay must not be neglected: For the third- position, Soldier of Britain looks very tempting on account of its low weight of only 140 lbs., but it. will be seri- ously challenged by Cossack's Beauty, which will be ridden by Mr. Pih. CHARTERS TOWERS HANDICAP: ONE MILE.

This will probably be the best race of the day, and will be contested by "B" Class Australian ponies. Hay- ing recently been demoted from "A" Class, Home Brew and Ranger will be called on to shoulder top weight of 165 lbs., which may hamper their chances of winning.

Home. Brew is undoubtedly a better class animal, however, and despite its heavy burden it is still capable of accounting for this race, but it will have to be in its very best form to defeat some of the other contenders, - particular Little Audrey (Mr. S. C. Liang), Lucky Lad (Mr. W.G. Poy), and Katinka.

At the last meeting I was keeping A close watch on Annabella, which was ridden by Mr. Pih, but it started badly and was, nover in the picture. Many will not feel inclined to back it, but in view of its performance in the Rooty-Hill Derty, Annabella 'may yet spring a surprise, The finish

HOUGH the football season

is

now officially closed, Chinese Club players will have little rest as the committee of both the South China Athletic Association and the Eastern Athletic Association are making arrangements for tours to the Straits and Siam during the close season.

The Saigon football team are visiting the Colony on May 13 and jexpect to stay here a week before

proceeding to Manila, where they' are scheduled to play five games.

While in Hong Kong they will be the guests of the South China Athletic Association, who are ar ranging three games for them. The first will be against South China and it is hoped that the Hong Kong Football Association and the Hong Kong Area Army Sports Board will field teams against them.,

The visitors, who have just left Singapore, have made a good im- pression so far and of the three games played in the Straits, win- ning the first easily, drawing the other and in their remaining ture being defeated by a margin.
