During the year, two Basic Survey Training courses were conducted with a total of 15 Surveying Assistants (Engineering) and 14 Surveying Assistants (Land) attending. Two Basic Cartographic Training courses were also conducted with a total of 19 Cartographic Assistants from this Office and 14 Cartographic Assistants from the New Territories Administration attending. Also, one elementary Survey Training Course was conducted which 14 Surveying Assistants (Estate) and 8 Surveying Assistants (Planning) from the Town Planning Office attended. All Surveying and Cartographic Assistants Class III are required to pass a departmental promotion examination before gaining promotion to Class II. During the year, results were as follows :-

A limited number of entrants who have the necessary academic qualifications to become Students of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors are recruited as Student Estate Surveyors and encouraged to take a correspondence course and to attend evening classes at the Hong Kong Polytechnic. Student Estate Surveyors, who were preparing for the Part II and Final examinations, were permitted to attend a day-release course at the Hong Kong Polytechnic on one day each week.

7.93 Two Surveying Assistants (Land) who had passed the First examination of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Land Surveying Section) were sent to the North East London Polytechnic, United Kingdom for a three-year B.Sc. course in Land Surveying.

7.94 Government Training Scholarships were awarded to two Assistant Estate Surveyors and one Student Estate Surveyor who passed the Part II examination of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors for attachment to Messrs. Gerald Eve & Co., England for one year, one Estate Surveyor on 9-month attachment programme with Messrs. Jones, Lang, Wootton, United Kingdom, one Assistant Cartographer on one year I.T.C. Diploma Course in Cartographic Engineering in Holland, one Cartographic Assistant I on 6-month attachment programme in Australia, one Land Surveyor on 12-month training course for Aerial Survey and Earth Sciences in Holland and one Surveying Assistant (Engineering) I, one Surveying Assistant (Land) I, one Surveying Assistant (Land) II and one Cartographic Assistant II on 8-month training course for Aerial Survey and Earth Sciences in Holland.

7.95 The Crown Lands and Survey Office Social Club continued its activities throughout the year. These included an annual Christmas party held at the Mariners' Club and organising inter-office sports contests.
