COTTON DUTIES IN EGYPT.

Mr. R. S. Hudson, Secretary for the Department of - Overseas Trade, yesterday received a depu- tation from the Manchester Chamber of Commerce who pre- sented their views on the recent increase in Egyptian tariffs on cotton.

GRAVE ANXIETY
The Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Trade ceived the deputation from the Manchester Chamber of Commerce. The deputation included repre- sentatives of the spinning, manu- facturing, finishing and exporting interests. It expressed the grave anxiety felt in Lancashire at the unexpected and severe increases in Egyptian cotton duties and urged the Government to make argent representations on the matter.
Emphasis was laid on the feeling in Lancashire-circles that the re- sult of the tariff changes could only have the effect of still further re- ducing the volume of exports” of British cotton textiles to the Egyp bian market.
~MISSION'S VISIT Reference was made to the visit to Egypt in December last of the Chamber's Mission headed by Sir Thomas Barlow and to the proposals which the mission placed before Egyptian officials which were design- ed to improve trading relations be- tween the two countries.
It, therefore, came as a complete shock to the whole of Lancashire to be faced with steep increases in the tariff, which would only have the reverse effect-British Wireless.
