One Superintendent of Quarries attended a symposium on Specialized Aspects of Quarrying at the Institute of Quarrying in U.K. during his vacation leave in July 1974. He also visited quarry crushing and screening plant, sand washing and bituminous-coated stone mixing plant manufacturers in U.K.

One Assistant Quarry Manager completed a 6-month diploma course in quarrying in U.K. in May 1974 and afterwards made a study tour at progressive quarrying companies in Northern France and Belgium.

Nineteen engineering graduates from the University of Hong Kong were employed as Civil Engineering Graduates in P.W.D. under agreement for a three-year training in accordance with the regulations of the Institution of Civil Engineers; nineteen entered their second year and fifteen entered their final year. Their training in various offices was co-ordinated by the Technical Secretary of the Civil Engineering Office.

Seventy Foremen were recruited as a result of two intakes during the year and they attended a 6-month full-time development training course conducted by the Technical Training Unit, to be followed by 18-month in-service field training and supplemented by 4-year part-time day-release courses especially organised by the Hong Kong Polytechnic.
Welfare
6.98 The Staff Welfare Officer continued to provide a wide range of services which included assistance offered to staff on application for loans, legal aid, places in schools, short-term relief in emergency cases and housing problems. Arrangements were also made for the direct purchase of rice from importers for re-sale to staff at prices 10% cheaper.

Joint Staff Discussion Groups on a Divisional basis continued to hold regular meetings with a view to maintaining and promoting mutual understanding and co-operation among all the staff of the Office.

Outings to Lamma Island for staff of the Office and their families were arranged and over 1,200 persons took part.
6.101 Members of the staff participated in all Departmental sports events throughout the year. C.E.O. teams were placed first in table tennis and volley ball, second in badminton, basketball, darts and golf and third in hockey. In the 7th P.W.D. Sports Day staff of this Office won four track events and one field event. The 7-a-side mini-football league for the Stead Challenge Trophy was held as a joint function with the Highways Office, six Divisions of the Office taking part.
