This Division's main responsibilities are the construction and maintenance of seawalls, reclamations, breakwaters, public piers and major ferry piers, both capital and maintenance dredging and the investigation of development schemes on Hong Kong Island. The work of the Division also includes marine site investigations, hydrographic surveys and underwater inspections throughout the territory waters. Satisfactory progress was made on most schemes throughout the year in spite of fuel and material shortages caused by the world economic and energy problems. Minor works carried out included the construction of light beacons at Magazine Island and Ap Lei Pai in the Lamma Channel and at Kau Yi Chau and Shek Kok Tsui, and the widening of the catwalk at the 13-mile pier near Tsuen Wan. The Division carried out marine site investigations, hydrographic surveys and underwater inspections throughout the territory and normal maintenance and capital dredging continued despite restrictions caused by the fuel shortage.
