NEW P. & O. LINER LAUNCHED "Canton" To Make Maiden Trip In October

The new fifteen-thousand-ton P. and O. liner, built for the Far Eastern run, the s.s. Canton, was launched on Clydeside yesterday, the ceremony being performed by the Hon. Thalia Shaw, daughter of the former chairman of the Com- pany, Lord Craigmyle.

Lord Craigmyle, speaking after the launch, referred to the fact that extensive provision had been made in the Canton for the carri- age of mails, and said that the fact that despite air mails, the P. and O. Company were carrying far more mail matter than before the war.

PLANE MISHAP AT KAI TACK

An accident while landing, re- sulted in a wrecked undercarriage and wing to the Hawker Swordfish aeroplane piloted by Pilot Officer Thomas when returning from 2 practice flight early on Thursday morning.

Pilot Officer's Thomas's plane was one of a flight of three, which- took part în formation exercises and returned to Kai Tack at about 7.30 am.

Prior to landing, the 'planes broke formation and all landed without mishap except Pilot Officer Thomas, who, coming in fast, side-slipped in order to lose the superfluous speed and came down so heavily on one wheel that it collapsed and the low- er starboard wing was damaged to such an extent that it will probably have to be replaced.

It is understood that Pilot Officer Thomas was flying solo at the time and escaped without injury other than minor abrasions.

MAHATMA GANDHI MEETS VICEROY

New Delhi, To-day. Lord Linlithgow and the Mahat- ma Gandhi had a meeting to-day lasting for a hundred minutes.

A communique issued afterwards. stated that the Viceroy wrote to Gandhi last month saying that he would be glad to renew his ac- quaintance. He added that he had no special business to discuss, but would welcome an opportunity to meet him.

Gandhi accepted the invitation with pleasure.

The communique adds that the meeting was cordial and dealt with general topics.-Reuter.

WAGES AND- HOURS BILL

Washington, Yesterday.

After some weeks of wrangling. the the Labour Committee of House of Representatives has re- commended a дет Wages and Hours Bill, which provides for a minimum wages of 25 cents an hour, increasing to 40 cents with- in three years.

Working hours are to be re- duced from 44 hours to 40 within two years. Reuter..
