Through traffic between Kowloon and Canton has been suspended since yesterday morning owing to the track being wrecked by Japanese bombers during an air-raid.

railway Inquiries from the authorities this morning revealed that no definite information has been received from the Chinese authorities as regards the dam- age caused. Repair gangs are working feverishly on the line and it is hoped that the line will be repaired for the expres- ses to and from Canton by to- morrow afternoon.

Trains between Kowloon and Shumchun are, however, run-

ning on schedule.

Paris, To-day.

The sit-down strikers in the Paris engineering and metal in- dustries began evacuating the factories last night after their Union's acceptance of the terms submitted by the Minister of Labour, stipulating a resump- tion of work on Tuesday, April 29, and declaring that in the interest of national defence it is the Government's imperative duty to end the dispute.

The employers have also ac- cepted and it is now expected that both parties will attend the Conference called by the Minis- ter of Labour for 4.40 p.m. to- day to discuss wages, hours and conditions.

Thirty of the smaller metal factories have already been evacuated.

The men remaining on the larger factories are insisting that the premises first be cleaned, but this is expected to.be effected this morning when gas and electricity sup- plies are restored. In the meanwhile, the Director-Gen- eral of Public works has ap- pointed an independent arbi- trator to give an award later in the dispute which now in- volves 158,000 men.-Reuter.

Paris, To-day. The report that France has ordered military aeroplanesTM from the United States at pre- sent remains unconfirmed, but well informed circles observe that it would be natural for the French Government to thus attempt to remedy the delay in their arms programme, occa- sioned by strikes, and would be justified in this moye by the seriousness of the present in- ternational situation.
