LEIVER'S AMAZING EFFORT
Sydney, February 10. Star event of the first night of the British Empire Games Aqua- tle Carnival was the 440 yards freestyle. The English "twins" Bob Leivers and Norman Wain- wright, won the two heats de- cided, and upset most people's calculations.
Curiously enough, both these boys come from "The Potteries," are about the same age, and have travelled the world together.
Leivers was relentless in the first heat. He maintained his revolu- tions with the pace on all the time, and established a British Empire Games record. His time was 4min. 37 9-10sec. Noel Ryan's best was 5min. 3sec., at the 1934 games.
CLAPPED ON PACE
From a beautiful start Leivers went to the front and clapped on the pace. He turned first from Pirie (Canada). Biddulph, and Hooper (Can). The first 100 yards -occupied Imin. 6sec. -
Biddulph spurted during the third lap, but Pirie was still lying second, with Hooper, and Newell (N.Z.) and Deane (England) next. Time for 200 yards was 2min. 21 3-5sec.
Biddulph passed Pirie. was next, and then came Newbiggen, and Deane, with Newell last.
