# PLANT OPERATION SUB-DIVISION

8.35

This Sub-Division is responsible for the operation and maintenance of major plant and consists of six Sections Incineration Plants and Abattoirs, Air Conditioning Plants, Hong Kong International Airport Services, Hong Kong City Hall, Lion Rock Tunnel and Hospital Services. The majority of these plants are required to provide a 24-hour year-round service.

# Incineration Plants, Abattoirs and Compost Plant

8.36 Three of the four lines of the Kennedy Town Incineration Plant were in almost continuous operation throughout the year and there were no major breakdowns. A rise in the consumption of oil, used to assist in burning, was experienced in the first quarter due to very wet refuse. During the year refuse was analysed to re-determine the paper, plastic and moisture content. A seven-day shut-down of the plant was necessary to enable work in connection with the new Fifth Line to be carried out. The opportunity was taken then to carry out furnace refractory repairs.

8.37 All Lines of the Lai Chi Kok Incineration Plant 'A' were in operation most of the year, but during the second quarter lines operated on reduced load to enable refractory repairs to be carried out. Staff were posted to the Lai Chi Kok Incineration Plant 'B' during the period under review to assist in the commissioning of the new Plant including the burning of refuse trials.
