SPARKLING badminton was witnessed at the Taikoo Club last night, when M. A. Oliveira and Miss M. Silva, of Club de Recreio, beat Patrick H. Wong and Miss W. M. Cheung by 18-17, 15-9, in their semi-final round encounter, in the Mixed Dou- bles Championship of the Colony.

Oliveira's covering of the court was amazing, while he received brilliant support from Miss Silva, whose net play provided one of the outstanding features of the two matches yesterday evening.

LAST NIGHT'S RESULTS

AT A GLANCE - Mixed Doubles Championship

The first set was most exciting. (mmmmmmmen Wong and Miss Cheung led 5-3, then Oliveira and Miss Silva led 10-5 and 13-8, a change of shuttle- cork at this stage resulting in Wong and Miss Cheung levelling the points at 13-13. Five up were then played, Wong and Miss Cheung taking a 4-3 lead, but bril- liant play at the net by Miss Silva led to two consecutive lobs to midcourt by Wong, and Oliveira tucked them both away for winners and the first set.

After an indifferent start in the second set, Miss Silva displayed a fine brand of badminton to estab lish a lead of 8-2 and 9-3, but Wong and Miss Cheung rallied, strong smashing by the Colony champion resulting in a levelling of the scores at 9-9, from which point the Recreio pair excelled, securing the next six points for set

and match.

South Africa Quite Content To Wait

Sydney, February 3. It is almost certain that the British Empire games, of 1942, will be held at Toronto, Canada.

At a meeting of the British Empire Games Association, in Sydney, on Friday, the matter is expected to be confirmed. South Africa, whose turn it was stage the Games, does not yet want them.

Canada, the country which staged the Empire Games, in 1980 is sure to put them over in the way. Australia is certain to her up by sending a big team.
