A JUMP OF BRITISH IMPORTS TO HONG KONG BY $2,100,000. AS COMPARED WITH JANUARY, 1937, THE TOTAL BEING $4,318,798, A JUMP OF GERMAN IMPORTS BY $5,550,000, AND A PHENOMENAL RISE OF AMERICAN IMPORTS BY $7,500,000 TO $9,330,892 FOR THE MONTH, AND A SLUMP OF JAPANESE IMPORTS TO $1,267,770 AS AGAINST $5,- 530,521 IN JANUARY, 1937, WERE THE OUTSTANDING FEATURES OF THE COLONY'S. TRADE DURING JAN- UARY, 1938, AS DISCLOSED THIS MORNING IN OFFICIAL RETURNS.

The Colony's trade with South China also showed a remarkable im- provement, total imports being $12,961,572 as compared with $7,379,252 a year ago, while from Hong Kong, Canton imported merchandise to the value of $10,508,965, $2,500,000 higher than in January, 1937. Trade with other parts of China also re- vealed an increase as compared with a year ago.
