The Japanese version of the incident in which Dr. Edwart Birt, the German doctor, was assaulted in the Hungjao Road area yesterday morn- ing, and which is stated to be based on the re- port of the local police chief, is that the Japt- ́ese soldier entered Hungjao village early y terday morning and proceeded to a wineshop.” Shortly before noon the soldier left the wineshop in a drunken state, and when jeered at by villag- ers, pulled out his bayonet, tied it to a long string and swung it round his head to keep the crowd away..
