SILKYLIGHT SECURES Brilliant Riding By R. B.
LIBERTY BAY IS BEATEN FOR FIRST TIME IN CAREER
MR. S. L. YUEN GRADUATES FROM NOVICE CLASS
LAST TWO RACES PAY GOOD DIVIDENDS GUIDED by an excellent rider in Mr. R. B. Moller,
who held him in check until after entering the straight, Silkylight, the winner of the 1938 Derby, yesterday caused the biggest racing sensation in local history by beating the hitherto "unbeatable" Liberty Bay, in the Champion Stakes, by a length, to record the coveted "Double"-the Derby and Champions.
WHETHER OR NOT THE EFFECT OF NEARLY BEING IN- JURED BY THE STARTING GATE HAD ANYTHING TO DO WITH LIBERTY BAY'S DEFEAT, IT IS HARD TO SAY, BUT MR. MOLLER'S RIDING IN THE STRAIGHT, WHEN HE BROUGHT SİLKYLIGHT THROUGH IN A FINAL
200 BURST ABOUT YARDS FROM HOME, LEFT LITTLE DOUBT AS TO WHICH WAS THE BETTER PONY, THE WINNER'S TIME WAS THREE- FIFTHS OF A SECOND OUTSIDE LIBERTY BAY'S RECORD!

It was a grand finish to a thrill- ing race and, although congratu- lations are due to Mr. Moller on his fine riding and to Silkylight for the splendid way it responded to its jockey's touch, regret will be felt by many at the first defeat of
