On Saturday the new subscrip- tion griffins were only seen in action in short distance events, whereas yesterday, in the Ex- change Plate, an indication was given of their stamina. For the Subscription Griffins Challenge Cup, to be decided to-day, I ex- pect to see the finish fought out between the following:
Golden Cow (Mr. S. C. Liang),
Louis XIV (Mr. S. W. Tang). Piet Hein (Mr. L. B. "Chao), Planchet (Mr. Needa).
Desert Star (Mr. Moller). Louis XIV surprised onlookers yesterday when it won the Ex- change Plate, as a result of which Mr. Tang enhanced his reputation as a rapidly improving jockey. He certainly showed strategy, and bis win was very ereditable indeed. Smiling Thru and Golden Cow had a rare tussle for second place, the latter only just managing to secure the verdict. Planchet started off very well, but evidently had no finish. In this longer race it may do better, but the jockey will need to nurse it very well.
I think Louis XIV will win, with Piet Hein second and Golden Cow third. If started, Desert Star is my choice for an outsider.
