SUNK AFTER ENGAGEMENT QUEENS
WITH BOCCA TIGRIS FORTS
Canton, To-day.
IT is officially learned this morning that three of four Japanese gun-boats which exchanged fire with the Bocca Tigris Forts shortly after 2 p.m. yesterday were struck by shells fired by the Chinese batteries.
Admiral Chan Chak, Comman- der-in-Chief of the Kwangtung Fleet, telegraphed the Comman- -der of the Fourth Route Army last night, stating that about 2 p.m. four Japanese warships were reported near Lin Tin Islands. Half an hour later the vessels steamed towards the Forts and started shelling.
The Chinese batteries immediately replied, firing a total of over 50 rounds before the vessels returned to their original base.
One of the ships was struck twice and, while steaming away from the scene, sunk in shallow water off the coast near Chek Wan, having been damaged below the waterline. Two other ship were also hit.
