ANNUAL RACE MEETING OPENS
Derby Favourite's
First Effort
The 1938 Annual Race Meet- Cash Sweeps were not as high ing opened this morning at the' as expected, the highest first prize Valley in overcast weather, but before tiffin being $1442.70 for a there was a fairly large crowd 7-starters event, while dividends present before the tiffin inter-illustrated that the racing public val and a very large attendance is indeed well informed, the high- is expected later in the after-est before lunch being $21.90 for noon, despite the cold snap that a third place. has set in.
The Derby Sweep has now ex- ceeded $800,000.

The outstanding feature of the five races before tiffin was the ap- pearance of Mr. R. B. Moller's | lows: Silkylight, a Derby favourite, in the Maiden Stakes. It looked a trifle stiff during its loosening-up gallop, and this was borne out later in the actual race, when it got away to a flying start and secured a lead of six lengths but only won by two lengths from the fresher Cameronian (Mr. Encar- nacao). Mr. Moller was not parti- cularly worried by Humdrum Eve's strong challenge at the Rock ----it actually led until the corner into the home stretch-but he was certainly surprised by Camero- nian's powerful finish, and barely
won.
An accident of a minor nature occurred in the first section of the Sydney Maidens, Cape York, con- sidered the worst tempered pony in training, throwing Mr. B. L. Tao at the Football Stands. For- tunately the jockey was not hurt. He walked back to the Jockeys Room and rode in the next race,
