JAPANESE POURING FRESH TROOPS INTO SHANSI FOR BIG NEW OFFENSIVE

Peiping, To-day.
Aim of the Japanese offensive in Ehansi, accord- ing to official Japanese sources, is to complete the clearance from the southern half of the province of all opposition, which is estimated to be composed of sixteen divisions of Shansi provincial troops, seven divisions of Central Government troops and several thousand Com- munist guerillas.
Japanese reinforcements are pouring into the pro- vince from Manchukuo via the Peiping-Han- kow Railway,
Japanese forces already in, action- are in the following positions: the centre and main body are occupied at Fenchow, the right column is driving on Linhsien, the left column is advancing from Pingyao and-an- other column is reported to have entered the province in the south-east from North Honan and is now 25 miles north-east of Luanfu.'
Chinese forces in Shansi threaten jointly with the main Chinese army to prevent the Japanese sweeping over the Yellow River in force and taking control of the Lunghai Rail- way-Reuter.
BOMBING OF CANTON AREA

Canton, To-day. Japanese planes visited the Canton Kowloon Railway morning at 9.30. Five dropped fourteen bombs tween Cheungmuktou and Tong- tingwei. A number of bombs were also dropped near Kongmei. The explosions could be distinctly heard in Canton where a number: of buildings were shaken. So far the damage has not been ascer- -tained. Reuter.

London, To-day. Last night's London Gazette contains the announcement. of the appointment of the Queen as Honorary Colonel of the First Bat talion, Hertfordshire Regiment (Territorial Association). It is press that the Queen was Hertfordshire born, her parents, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore being in residence at St. Paul's Waldon, near Hitchin, at the time of Her Majesty's birth British Wireless.

Washington, To-day An entirely new type of aer ial attack, against which bat- tleships and other surface- craft will be powerless, was described by a military inven- tor, Lester Barlow, giving evi- dence before the House naval committee yesterday.
Barlow, who claims to be the first man to use bombs in aerial warfare, said that the new offensive, weapon. known

THIRTEEN KILLED IN SHIUKWAN AIR RAID
Canton, To-day. During the air-raids over Canton and suburbs yesterday, 49 Japanese planes dropped over 50 bombs at different points.
Three bombs were dropped in the town of Shiu Kwan, and according. to official figures rceived yesterday afternoon, 13 were killed, while three small buildings were damaged.
