Chinese Air Force Reorganisation On Big Scale
KOW, To-day.
The Chinese Government is by no means relying exclusively upon the Soviet for the supply of aircraft and men.
Contracts have been signed with American inter- ests for establishment of an aircraft factory in China, which is expected to be in full opera- tion at the end of sixteen months.
Meanwhile, although present ar- rangements for the continued sup- ply of machines and pilots from Russia are to stand, the Chinese Government is making large pur- chases of aircraft from Europe and America..
At present there
are three groups in the Chinese air force.
The largest consists of Soviet machines and ̈ pilots, who are concentrated as a self- contained unit under the leadership of a Soviet "ace”. who saw service in the Span- ish civil war.
FOREIGN LEGION
The second group comprises the small number of foreign volunteers known as the Foreign Legion, who
the are under
command of an American, Colonel Chenault, and are composed of Americans, Frenchmen, Canadians and Aus- tralians, some of whom have been killed in action and others as the result of accidents.
There are not more than about a dozen of them at the moment. Their squrdron leader is an Ameri- can named Schmidt..
CHINESE PILOTS
of
The third element consists Chinese pilots who are learning to fly newly purchased aircraft from Europe and America.
The Chinese air force is being completely reorganised and Chin- ese circles here state that the time is not far distant when China will greatly extend the operations of her aircraft against the Japanese. The Chinese Government aims to maintain the strength of its Air Force at 500 planes, half to be sup- plied by the Soviet and the other half by Europe and America.-Reu- ter.

INTRIGUING
LONDON
POURPARLER
London, To-day.
- Unusually long Anglo- Italian diplomatic talks
yesterday have aroused speculation as to their nature.
Count Dino Grandi, Italian Ambassador, spent 75 minutes with Mr. Neville Chamberlain and Mr. Anthony Eden in the morning at 10, Downing Street, and returned in the afternoon and resumed the conversation.
The opinion is generally held that the statesmen dis- cussed the Austrian situation, and it is believed that. Mr. Chamberlain wished to discuss Italy's position in regard to the Stresa Agreement which guaranteed Austrian indepen- dence.
“GENERAL SITUATION”
At the conclusion of Count Gran- di's visit an official statement was issued stating that the Ambassador discussed with the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary the general international situation and rela tions between the two countries.- Reuter.
