It does not seem so very long ago
THE certainly macche Jockey Club held their 1987 annual pace
Meeting, but fully 12 months have gone by. We are again on the eve of another Annual Race Meeting.
The ringing of the first bell at 11.00 a.m. to-morrow will herald the commencement of the outstanding sporting event. of the year. Weeks of active preparation will culminate in introducing the 1938 Annual Race Meeting to the racing public with all its glories and uncertainties, and, judging by the great interest it has aroused, I feel safe in predicting that this year's Meeting will produce many new records.
The many admirers of Mr. D. S. Li will regret to learn that he is definite- ly unable to come down this year, and the Kong Bros. stable will accordingly miss the services of a jockey who has proved himself most dependable in former years. It is believed that his place will probably be filled by Mr. R. B. Moller to a certain extent, and as I have seen Mr. S. C. Liang, our 1937 champion, riding Tornado Star at morning trials, I conclude that he will handle their Australian ponies.

for two reasons. Firstly, it was the sick list for about two weeks, and, secondly, it does not like the starting barrier.
Mr. Encarnaçao has the choice on either Cameronian or Lucky in this race, but whichever one he selects: could not expect to do better than run second.

"RACE NO. T THE FOOCHOW CUP: 1% MILES
In this race last year, we were treat- ed to a brilliant finish when King's Warden (Mr. Marshall) just managed to snatch a grand victory from Wild Life (Mr. Frost). I am afraid that this year's finish will be very tame in comparison, as the presence of Liberty Bay (Mr. Maitland) will frighten oft mast owners. Out of the seven ponies. entered, the Dunbar stable has four, Dynasty two and Dr. Reidy one:
I expect King's Warden to be reser ved for the last race of the day, the New Stables Plate, which it will have a good chance of winning. Trentbridge has been entered, but I doubt whether its owner will consider it prudent to send it out for this gruelling race on its reappearance after such a long absence.
I expect, therefore, to see only three ponies facing the starter;
Liberty Bay (Mr. Maitland). Soldier of Honour (MP Ralph). Wild Life: (either Mr. Black or Mr. 8. W. Tang).
Practically no interest will be taken in this race from a betting point-of- view, as Liberty Bay is debarred, and there will not be many who would care

I expect Mr. A. W. Raymond will take out Lancashire Lass for this event rather than wait for the Trial Plate, but its chances of winning against Humdrum Eve are remote:
:
My nominations are accordingly:- Humrum Eve to win with Advancing Time, Cameronian, Lancashire Lass and Jober fighting it out for the minor places.

Judging on training performances, regard the following as being the best.
among the new lot of ponies:
Australian
A Lovely Time (Mr. Pote-Hunt). Annabella (Mr. Proulx). Bredon (Mr. Ralph). Cape York (Mr. Tao). Criffel (Mr. Maitland).
King's Privilege (Mr. Needa). Little Audrey (Mr. H. C. Pih) The Buffer (Mr. Marshall). Tornado Star (Mr. Liang).
The two Sydney Maiden Stakes last year were won by Lancashire Chips and Gypsy Love, ridden by Mr. H. C. Pih and Mr. D. S. Li respectively.
With Little Audrey, Mr. Pib has a great opportunity of repeating his last year's win. His greatest danger will come from Annabella, Bredon, Cape York, Criffel, King's Privilege and Tornado Star.It is, of course, only natural to presume that they will all not clash in the same section, but I submit that the winners of the two sections will come from six ponies have named.
I previously reported that Annabella became a little stiff in training, but it has apparently recovered from this temporary lapse and I am now nearly- sure that it will be taken out by Mr. and Proulx. Both King's Privilege
