IRONY OF FATE IN POLICE TRAGEDY

was

who had just recently been decorated with the long service medal, was killed last night in Queen's Road -East in endeav- ouring to escape from the police!

The victim, Chu Ping, in a house in which gambling was proceeding, which was raid- ed by Sub-Inspector Darkin and Sergeant Bentley on a warrant. Chu Ping tried to evade detec- tion by climbing from one ver- andah to another, missed his footing and fell to the ground. He was critically injured and died at 10p.m. in hospital.

The deceased sergeant was 50 years of age. He joined the Force in 1916 and was promot- ed Lance-Sergeant in 1931. He was commended by the Officer Administering the Government in 1927 for his zeal and cour- age in effecting the arrest of an armed robber at the Sun Co.

An inquest will be held.
