STRONG CRITICISM

OF “HERMIT NATIONS"

Washington, To-day.

The willingness of the United States Government to limit and reduce armaments, was expressed by the Secretary of State, Mr. Cordell Hull, in a broadcast speech yesterday.

Mr. Hull said: "While in a world in which increased construction of armaments is a regrettable fact, we are compelled to render adequate our military and naval establishment, we are ready at any time to join other nations in a common effort to bring about a general limitation and reduction of armaments.

Mr. Hull attacked what he called

"hermit nations," meaning nations seeking economie self-sufficiency.

He declared that economic war- fare was largely responsible for the recent alarming disintegration of international relationships.

War and fear of war was grip- ping the minds and stultifying the spirit of mankind, and feverish preparations for potential · armed conflicts were sapping the already badly impaired economic health of many nations.
