"MERCURY SPEED PLANE SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED FROM COMPOSITE CRAFT

The Mayo composite aircraft, known as the "Picka- back" plane, because it consists of a small ma- chine, the "Mercury," perched on the back of the large one, the "Maia," successfully launch- ed the upper plane in mid-air at Rochester yesterday.
This was the first separation flight of this revolutionary aircraft, de- stined for trans-Atlantic service.
The two units, fastened together, took off from the water as one air- craft, and at a height of 3,000 feet, the two pilots pulled the release levers and the units separated, fin- ally alighting on the Medway separate aircraft,
