CHIANG KAI-SHEK GRANTS INTERVIEW: NO OFFENSIVE UNTIL END OF FEBRUARY

Berlin, To-day.

An interview with General Chiang Kai-shek, which is remarkably sympathetic to China, published in the "Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung" from its special correspondent in Hankow, refutes the view entertained in many German circles, and often expressed in the German press, that China is under Communist influence.

and quotes General Chiang as say- ing that guerilla warfare is being prepared by the Chinese forces.

No sort of offensive is possible at. present, the Generalissimo is alleged to have said, but reorganisation and filling up of the Chinese divisions will be completed by the end of February. Reuter.

SINGAPORE WAR MANOEUVRES

Singapore, To-day. With the arrival of Vice-Ad- miral L. G. E. Crabbe, Comman- der-in-Chief, China Squadron, and Vice-Admiral the Hon. Sir Alexander, Ramsay, Commander- in-Chief, East India, the stage is set for commencement of the most extensive manoeuvres ever staged at Singapore.

The exercises are scheduled to start on February 2 for the purpose of testing the various defences, and the warships and aircraft participating in the manoeuvres have now all sembled in Singapore.

The planes, number 110, comprise 36 local planes, 20 from the aircraft- from carrier H.M.S. Eagle and 54 Iraq and India, while the warships, which total twenty, include three sloops of the Royal Indian Navy, H.M.S. Eagle, the submarine mother- ship H.M.S. Medway and ten marines from China.

AMBASSADOR'S ESCAPE

London, To-day. The new Soviet Ambassador to China, M. Luganets-Orelsky, who had presented his credentials to President Lin Sen at Chungking on Monday, escaped death by a hair's breadth on his return flight to Hankow, according to despatches from the Yangtse port.

The plane placed at the Ambas- sador's disposal by the Chinese Government had to make an emer- gency landing at Ichang.

Just when the plane had landed, the airfield was bombed by Japan- ese planes.

One bomb exploded in the imme- diate vicinity of the Ambassador and his companions, some of whom are reported to have been wounded. -Trans-Ocean.
