11.24 The Division is responsible for the design, preparation of contracts, supervision of construction and commissioning on completion of all new water supply projects other than schemes carried out by Consulting Engineers and certain minor works carried out by Distribution Division.
11.25 The heavy commitment of the Division on works associated with the High Island and desalting projects reported last year continued throughout the current year.
11.26 The annual expenditure was $125,000,000, an increase of $58,000,000 over the previous year. For the second year running this very large increase reflected the Division's involvement in the High Island and desalting projects.
11.27 During the year an extension to one of the treatment works in the New Territories was completed and commissioned. There was a large increase in main laying work and approximately 40 miles of fresh and salt water mains over three inches diameter were laid and commissioned. Appendix BB gives details of works under construction and works completed during the year.
Hong Kong Island
11.28 Work to improve fresh water supplies to the Jardine's Lookout and Shouson Hill areas was completed while work to improve fresh and salt water supplies to Shau Kei Wan and Chai Wan areas continued to schedule.
Kowloon and New Territories
11.29 Extension of the capacity of the Tai Po Tau treatment works to 12 million gallons per day was completed and contracts were prepared for the remaining works to improve supplies to Sheung Shui area.
11.30 The construction of access roads for the High Island scheme and the laying of twin 60 inches diameter water mains from Sha Tin treatment works to Lion Rock tunnel were completed, while the construction of tunnels, including that through Lion Rock, intakes and catchwaters for the scheme continued satisfactorily.
11.31 Pipelaying work for the provision of filtered water supply to Tsing Yi Island was completed.
11.32 Construction commenced on the first stage of the project for the extension of fresh and salt water high level supplies to development in the eastern part of New Kowloon.
11.33 Two overseas contracts for the manufacture and erection of plant for the extension of the capacity of Sha Tin treatment works from 175 million gallons per day to 240 million gallons per day were awarded and the preparation of the contract for the associated civil engineering works commenced.
11.34 Design work for new high level fresh and salt water supplies to the high levels of Lai Chi Kok Peninsula commenced.
