THE CHIEF JUSTICE, SIR ATHOLL · MacGREGOR, STRONGLY COMMENTED ON THE METHODS EMPLOYED BY THE POLICE AND THE MAGISTRACY IN UNNECESSARILY DELAYING THE BRINGING UP FOR TRIAL OF AN ACCUSED, AND STATED THAT AN OBSERVATION FROM THE COM- |MISSIONER OF POLICE WAS DESIRED IN CONNECTION WITH THE CASE OF LI TAM-WAI WHO, ARRAIGNED BEFORE HIS LORDSHIP AT THE CRIMINAL SESSIONS THIS MORNING ON A CHARGE OF HAVING PARTICIPATED IN AN ARMED ROB- BERY ON A JUNK OFF PING CHAU ISLAND, WAS FOUND NOT GUILTY AND ACQUITTED.
The accused was alleged to have boarded a junk on October 19 last and together with three other men to have robbed. Wong Che-kwong and Li Kat-fai of rice and gro ceries.

In summing up the case the Chief Justice warned the jury of the unescapable danger of con-
victing a person on circumstantial evidence which the evidence of the witnesses amounted to.
The jury retired and returned verdict of not guilty.
