Street Lighting

A total of 229 new street lamps were installed on the Island, 559 in Kowloon and 370 in the New Territories.

Annual expenditure on street lighting on Hong Kong Island increased by 15.3% from $2,015,000 to $2,323,000.

On the Mainland, the annual expenditure on street lighting increased by 4.1% from $4,542,000 to $4,728,000, comprising $3,409,000 in Kowloon and $1,319,000 in the New Territories.
Public Transport

The planning, design and improvement of bus stops, bays, termini, public light bus stands and other facilities continued throughout the year either independently or as part of road improvement schemes.

The new bus terminus at Lai Chi Kok under the elevated section of Kwai Chung Road was brought into operation.

In connection with the implementation of a comprehensive traffic management scheme for the Central Business District on the Island, five on-street and three off-street public light bus termini were established. On the Mainland, three new public light bus stands were established in replacement of the existing ones.

Bus services on the Mainland continued to expand. Two new cross-harbour routes were introduced as well as additional routes serving villages in the New Territories.

In the Happy Valley area, an exclusive westbound bus lane on Leighton Road was provided in conjunction with a traffic management scheme involving the re-routing of part of the circular route around the race-course to one-way in a clockwise direction.

A major traffic management scheme, aimed at improving bus services in the Mid-Levels area on the Island, was planned. The main feature of this scheme is the designation of traffic lanes on the main roads in the area for the exclusive use of buses.

In conjunction with the completion of the H.K. Yau Ma Tei Ferry Terminal near Hing Man Street in Shaukiwan, a bus terminus and a public light bus stand were provided and put into use.

A Traffic Management Section was set up under a Senior Engineer to study the implications, for the Colony road network, of constructing the Mass Transit Railway. Plans have been drawn up to minimise traffic congestion during the construction of the initial stages of the Mass Transit work.
