9.36

Consultants continued to undertake a major share of the highway construction programme. They were commissioned for nine additional projects during the year. The expenditure on projects undertaken by Consultants was about $100 million.

9.37

Five firms of consultants (two overseas and three local) are currently engaged on about fifty projects. Feasibility studies on the proposed Aberdeen Tunnel, Canal Road Flyover Extension to Wongneichong Road, West Kowloon Corridor from Yau Ma Tei to Lai Chi Kok and Pokfulam Road/Connaught Road West Link were completed and detailed design work for the first three projects commenced. Investigations on a bridge across Lei Yue Mun Gap and Hong Kong Island Eastern Corridor were started. Design of a number of other highways projects continued.

9.38

On Hong Kong Island, the improvement of the Robinson Road/Castle Road junction and the widening of Shek Pai Wan Road had commenced on site. A start had also been made on the construction of a pilot tunnel along the alignment of the proposed Aberdeen Tunnel, which would provide a direct link between Happy Valley and Wong Chuk Hang areas.

9.39

Construction of the Kowloon Foothills road with the associated interchanges progressed well during the year. The first major interchange at the southern approach to the Lion Rock Tunnel had been opened to traffic with considerable improvements to the conditions at this busy junction. Work on another busy corridor at Waterloo Road and Argyle Street also commenced.

9.40

In the New Territories, the Tsing Yi Bridge across Rambler Channel was completed and opened by His Excellency the Governor. The bridge was built by a private consortium and handed over to Government. The approach roads on both sides were constructed by Government for concurrent completion. The design work for the new road between Tsuen Wan and Tuen Mun, 9 1/2 miles long, was completed and international tenders were received.

9.41

Consultants continued to investigate the slope stability of a number of areas and submit reports for remedial measures.
