Grade Separated access to the Airport Maintenance Area. Much detailed planning work was carried out on contracts for the Airport Tunnel Road from Kowloon Bay Reclamation to Kwun Tong. The extension of Tai Yip Street on Kowloon Bay Reclamation was completed.

In the central part of Kowloon, the widening of Princess Margaret Road between Wylie Road and Argyle Street was completed and will further improve this northern approach route to the Cross Harbour Tunnel. The widening of Waterloo Road between Flint Road and York Road including the decking over of the nullah was completed. This will eventually link up with the major interchange at Waterloo Road/Prince Edward Road/Boundary Street.

Work also commenced on the Elevated Road from Prince Edward Road over Nathan Road to Lai Chi Kok Road which will cater for the heavy east-west traffic and future traffic re-routing necessitated by the construction of the Mass Transit Railway. Work was completed on Lung Cheung Road Extension, Stage II and on the widening of Tung Tau Tsuen Road.

Several major contracts were started which will form part of the Primary Distributor Route along the western side of Kowloon Peninsula. These included Canton Road Duplication, Jordan Road Intersection and Ferry Concourse Stage I, Tong Mi Road Extension and the Elevated Road from Gascoigne Road to Tong Mi Road Extension. A contract for the construction of pedestrian subways and drainage works in Tong Mi Road Extension was completed as first stage of the work along this route.

The bus terminus under Lai Chi Kok Bridge was completed and brought into use while work commenced on the nearby New Lai Chi Kok Beach Road,

Tenders were called for the construction of a footbridge over Nathan Road near Soy Street and design was well advanced for another footbridge at Choi Hung Road near Tai Shing Street.

Castle Peak Road was widened to a dual three-lane carriageway between Kwai Chung and Tsuen Wan and work continued on the provision of dual carriageways between Tuen Mun and Ping Shan. Planning continued for Tsuen Wan Bypass between Kwai Chung Road and Texaco Road. Tunnelling work progressed well on the Second Lion Rock Tunnel under the supervision of Waterworks Office.

The improvement of Tai Po Road by the provision of a climbing lane near Hong Kong Chinese University continued and planning of further improvements between the Chinese University and Tai Po was carried out.

Planning continued for improving Clearwater Bay Road between Anderson Road and Hiram's Highway.

Major improvements to Tai Tong Road, serving the Shap Pat Heung area, and the Tin Sam - Ha Tsuen Road were completed and work continued on Lam Tei Road. Improvements to Ping Ha Road and Lok Ma Chau Road were planned as part of the Recreational Roads Programme. Work commenced on two car parks adjoining Castle Peak Road, one near Ting Kau and the other at the 18½ milestone.
