More than a thousand entries were received for the two competitions organised by the "Sunday Herald" in its special Christmas issue of December 19, in spite of an unexpected and unwitting compli- cation afforded by last-minute change of three ad- vertisements which had been chosen for the pur- poses of the Cutting Competition.

The result was that only seventeen of the cuttings. lected were actual- ly to be found within the paper, for which the "Sunday Herald" owes an apology to its readers.

The first four entries opened that contained the other 17 cuttings cor- rectly identified were Jeclared the {winners.

JAPANESE BOMB NEAR CANTON

Canton, To-day. Several Japanese planes were sighted from Shameen this.. morning heading westward, and a few minutes later the thunder of bombs was faintly audible all over Canton.

Chinese sources, at present unconfirmed, state that Chinese planes went up and participat- ed in an aerial dog-fight

The Japanese objective was possibly the Canton-Samshuî Railway, and bombs thought to have been dropped between Canton and Fatshan.-
