(By "TRAVELLER")

THOSE who thought that the days of the big transfer fee were nearly over received a rude shock this week when it was found that Blackpool had paid £10,000 for William Buchan, the Celtic în- side forward.

There are many people who will say that no player is worth THIRD ROUND £10,000, because, even from an actuarial standpoint, it is a very expensive proposition, together with the risk of injury. Bachan, presumably, is going to cost in the region of £1,000 per annum, plus his wages, for the rest of his playing career.

The other way of looking at it is that if certain players we all know are worth $4,000 and £5,000, then Buchan is certainly worth the five figures. Also, he is probably worth a whole lot more to Blackpool in their pre- sent dire straits than he is to many another club.
