Yangtze River Closed By New Boom
Hankow, To-day.
A new Chinese boom across the Yangtze River at Kiukiang, half way between Wuhu and Han- kow, is now in position, closing the river to naviga- tion above this point.
A number of British and American gunboats and merchantmen which for various reasons did not follow H.M.S. Capetown, H.M.S. Ladybird and U.S.S. Oahu down river, are therefore bottled up in the reaches of the Yangtsze above the boom.
It is hoped the boom will prevent Japanese warships steaming up river and bombarding Hankow in the attack the Japanese are now expected to make on the city.
