Kwai Chung Container Terminal

The dredging of the sea approaches to the terminal and the access roads and flyover were completed.
Maintenance and Dredging

General maintenance and repairs were carried out to Government piers, seawalls, breakwaters, salt-water pumphouses, navigational markers and light beacons.
6.55 The two old pontoon dredgers which have been modified and are now powered by diesel engines instead of steam, continued maintenance dredging at nullah outfalls, pier approaches, sewer outfalls, salt-water pumphouse intakes, and the quantity and fairways in the Causeway Bay and Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelters. The spoil removed by these dredgers amounted to 45,800 cubic yards. The self-propelled hopper dredger carried out dredging to deepen the Eastern Fairway and also continued with the deepening of the Central Fairway, removing a total of 303,500 cubic yards of spoil.
6.56 The Division's divers carried out underwater inspection of seawalls, piers, pumphouses, submarine sewer outfalls, breakwaters, and watermains. A total of 564 hours of diving time was recorded.
Surveys and Marine Site Investigations

A total of 464 marine boreholes, 14,578 feet in aggregate, was sunk at various locations in the Colony waters.
6.58
The Survey Section had another active year carrying out both land and marine surveys, including "Sparker Surveys" at Lamma Patch and in three channels adjacent to Ma Wan.

The Quarries Section is directly responsible to the Principal Government Civil Engineer for the operation of the two Government quarries, the administration of contract quarries, advice on quarrying matters generally, the collection and sale of natural sand, and the operation of the P.W.D. Laboratories that provide a material testing service to Government and the public. Details of quarry production, sand sales, laboratory tests, and revenue earned by the Quarries Section are given in Appendix S.
