STAFF AND TRAINING
There was some increase in the staff as a result of the expansion of the Authorised Establishment, but the Office as a whole was still below strength. In the combined professional grade of Building Surveyors and Assistant Building Surveyors, 12 posts were filled during the year, 8 being recruited from overseas, and by the end of the year 43 vacancies remained in the grade.
There were 4 new recruits to the structural engineering grade which, however, still remained under strength.
The Professional Training Board continued to assist Student Building Surveyors in their preparation for the examinations of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. This preparation included attendance at a Hong Kong Polytechnic Day Release Course for both Part II and the Final Examinations of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

At the beginning of the year there were four Assistant Building Surveyors and ten Student Building Surveyors under training and the results of the 1973 examinations were the best ever achieved, three candidates passing the Part II examination and seven passing the Final examination with subsequent election as Corporate Members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. A further seven Student Building Surveyors were appointed to replace those promoted as a result of their successes in the examinations.

A certain amount of reappraisal of training has been necessitated by the introduction of Tests of Professional Competence by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. This requires the keeping of Diaries for submission to the Institution and involves the secondment of students who are subject to this Test to other Branches of P.W.D. to obtain the appropriate breadth of experience. The overall co-ordination of the procedures is under the supervision of the Chairman of the Professional Training Board with Supervising Officers who direct Students' day-to-day training.

The Technical Training Board conducted a series of lectures attended by Surveying Assistants (Building) Class III and at the annual examination conducted by the Board five of the six candidates were successful and were subsequently posted within the Office in positions which will give them practical experience.
