PORT WORKS DIVISION

Chief Engineer:

H.R.A. CHAMBERLAIN, B.Sc., C.Eng., F.I.C.E.

YAM Kwok-chi, B.Sc.(Eng.), C.Eng., M.I.C.E. (Acting)

6.39 This Division's main responsibilities are the construction and maintenance of seawalls, reclamations, breakwaters, public piers and major ferry piers and the investigation of development schemes on Hong Kong Island. Satisfactory progress was maintained throughout the year on most contracts despite the adverse effects of the prolonged summer rains and the shortage of certain construction material caused by the world economic problems and energy crisis. Minor works undertaken included the construction of mooring facilities for police craft in Deep Bay, a tide-gauge house at Tsim Bei Tsui, four mooring marker dolphins in the Yau Ma Tei Typhoon Shelter, the construction of an access road to the Chai Wan reclamation, on which a Mass Transit Railway works site is planned, and two breasting dolphins together with a short extension of the Old Cattle Pier at Kennedy Town to enable larger vessels to use it. Division also undertook marine site investigations, hydrographic surveys and underwater inspections of piers, watermains, seawalls and sewage outfalls throughout the Colony waters. An investigation into refuse disposal by controlled tipping on Hong Kong Island was also completed.
