Site formation work was well advanced for Quarters for Heads of Departments in Barker Road and Mount Kellett Road and site formation work was under way for Non-Departmental Quarters at Borrett Road.

Social Welfare Department

Work on the construction of Chai Wan Community Centre was well advanced when the year closed and the work involved in the establishment of a "Place of Refuge" at the Aberdeen Rehabilitation Centre was completed.

Urban Services Projects

In the urban areas playgrounds were completed at San Po Kong and Kwun Tong, while Off-Street Refuse Collection Points were completed in Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei, San Po Kong and Sham Shui Po.

A Latrine was completed at Bedford Road, as were Latrine and Bath-house buildings at the junction of Mong Kok Road and Shanghai Street and at the junction of Apliu Street and Kweilin Street.

Also completed in the urban areas during the year were Shek Tong Tsui Market, Wong Tai Sin Market, a Temporary Market in Mong Kok and a Temporary Wholesale Market at Cheung Sha Wan.

4.82

In the New Territories, Off-Street Refuse Collection Points were completed in Tsuen Wan and Sai Kung Town, a Latrine was completed at Shek Pik on Lantau Island and a Temporary Market was completed in Yuen Long.

4.83 As the year closed, Kennedy Town Swimming Pools Complex was nearing completion and construction of Pokfulam Road Playground was well advanced, as was the construction of Pest Control Stores, Offices and Quarters at Rennies Mill.

In the New Territories, work on Tsuen Wan Swimming Pools Complex and Park was progressing well as was a Lavatories and Refreshment Kiosk at Clear Water Bay Park, while construction work was under way for an Off-Street Refuse Collection Point at Tuen Mun San Hui.

Services Projects

4.85 At the beginning of the year there were nineteen projects under construction, of which six were of major proportions. Superstructure work for 39 Married Soldiers Quarters at Victoria Barracks was progressing smoothly. When completed, they will replace three blocks of old army quarters situated on the south side of Kennedy Road, thus enabling highways improvement schemes to proceed.

4.86

During the year, a transmitter station for the Gurkha Broadcasting System was completed, while a contract for the construction of a broadcasting studio in Sek Kong Camp was let. At H.M.S. Tamar, a new Medical/Dental Centre was completed together with an additional floor to the existing Sick Bay. Fire Station at Sek Kong Camp, a Warrant Officers' and Sergeants' Mess at Queen's Camp and an extensive modernization scheme for the Joint Services Transmitter Stations on Stonecutters Island were also completed.
