DRASTIC GUT IN RUBBER QUOTA LEVEL

It is understood from circles close in touch with the Inter- national Rubber Committee, that the drastic cut in the export quota for the first quarter of 1938, fixed yesterday at 70 per cent, has not met with any strong opposition from the American delegation.

Informants state that the cut, in -the quota will result that production and consumption should be about equalised in the first quarter of next year, though stocks in that period Queen's Boad, Central. may show some increase, as Novem- ber/December production will then be arriving at consuming centres.
PLEASANT SURPRISE
The Committee's decision came as a pleasant surprise, the market ful- filling the most optimistic expecta- tions, a wave of buying immediate- ly developing and prices rising over a halfpenny in excited trading: The high levels were not maintained, however, owing to profit-taking.
It is pointed out that quota coun- tries will produce about 56,000 tons less in the first quarter of 1938 than in the current quarter, which should easily offset the decline in American consumption.
WATCHING FRENDS
The fact that the Committee re frained from fixing the quota for April/June is favourably comment- ed upon 25 indicating their determination. to watch trend in consumption in the new year and adjust the quota accordingly.
