During the year under review, 150 cases of lost or deficient stores under S.R. 394(a)(c) were reported by various offices of the Public Works Department and the total value of losses written off was $32,225.27 compared with 107 cases valued at $18,219.47 for the previous year.

The Annual Departmental Stocktaking under S.R. 391 was conducted at 103 stores locations within the Public Works Department, resulting in 31 discrepancies being found. The surpluses and deficiencies were subsequently adjusted or written off.

2.53 The seventh year of this Unit continued with routine audit of contracts, but on a small scale. The main task was a Programme of Investigation and Reports on Selective Audit Studies covering matters relating to the effective use of the Department's resources of staff, equipment and money.

2.54

From this programme, Reports were researched, prepared and submitted on Financial Status of Contractors, Surety Bonds and Retention Money, Contractors' Claims, Labour and Material Fluctuations and Extension of Contract Periods and Liquidated Damages.

2.55

The vacancy rate for professional staff in the Unit continued for a further year at 25%, and recruitment was eventually discontinued as a result of a policy change.

The future of the Unit remained under consideration.

The P.W.D. Metrication Executive Unit was created in June 1972, its primary task being to formulate a metric philosophy within the P.W.D.
