KING LEOPOLD ON BRITAIN'S PLACE IN THE WORLD

London, To-day.

THE Duke of Kent, the Prime Minister, Mr. Ne- ville Chamberlain, the Chancellor of the Ex- chequer, Sir John Simon, the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, and the heads of the Ser- vices, attended a resplendent banquet in the an- cient Guildhall last night in honour of King Leopold of Belgium.

The King, replying to the Lord Mayor's welcome, likened London to a stage in the world theatre. To London, more than any other, he said, came echoes of the anxieties to which the whole world

was prey.

Britain, therefore, had special re- sponsibilities as regards world affairs, more particularly economic matters, which lay at the root of international problems besetting the world

"Political objectives are of con- cern only to certain sections of mankind but the better ordering of économic life is of interest to mankind as a whole. We are faced with a world which is complicated by various national problems. To solve these difficulties we need ́a clear view of economic realities, seen with dispassionate eye, and divorced from every other consi- deration."
