FEW ITALIAN TROOPS IN ISLE OF MAJORCA
London, To-day
A question which has aroused great interest in Lon-
don for some time past whether a large num ber of regular Italian troops are at present on the island of Mallorca, in the Balearics -- is discussed at length by "The Times" in a lead- ing article commenting on a report from its special correspondent at Palma de Mallorca.
The leader says it may fairly be
said that there are no great Italian forces on Mallorca
"Whatever may be the intentions NANKING STIRS:
of General Franco and Signor Mussolinione fact concerning rumours of Italian occupation of Mallorca must be emphasised, namely that the number of Italians. there is by comparison with the number of Spaniards considerably smaller than on the mainland.
ON WAY HOME
"The only Italian soldiers seen in Palma have been men on their way home to Italy from Spain, and had stopped in Palma for a few hours to stretch their legs.” -
The journal quotes its Palma correspondent, as saying that the Spanish Nationalist troops at Palma are extremely well-equipped.
Most of their machine guns, he reveals, are of Soviet manufacture, having been taken from inter- cepted freighters on
ver way to Spain Trans-Ocean.

NO PANIC
Nanking, To-day. The capital is humming with the activity of a dis- turbed antheap as the Jap- anese threat to the city looms larger, but there is no panic
Chinese quarters state the opinion that the city will soon be the target for inten- tive bombing and contend that the Chinese Govern- ment is therefore moving out in good time.
The foreign consulates are handling disposition of their nationals but announce ment of their plans is be ing withheld pending further developments.
The streets are thronged and every available motor- car, carriage and ricksha is carrying goods to the Bund and out of the capital by road.
The Hsiakwan Bund presents a scene of liveliest activity, with the roadway piled high with goods and baggage for the few available steamers.
Soviet, acceptance of the Bri-Renter tish plan for Spain is featured in the British press as the out- standing news of the day.
However, it is realised that many difficulties lie ahead of the non- intervention committee, particular- ly on the question of what consti- tutes "substantial withdrawal” of volunteers.
The Daily Telegraph" says this question has already been con- sidered by Mr. Anthony Eden and MYvon Delbos (when they met in Brussels) and that some agreement was arrived at.
The paper also states that the question of frontier control has be come a bone of contention Trans- Ocean.
