Attention to shipping difficulties in the Far East was drawn in the House of Commons vester- day by Mr. A. C. Moreing (Conservative, Preston).
Mr. Moreing first asked if the Board of Trade was aware that British merchants in Shanghai were seriously handicapped by the prohibitive rates quoted for war risks for vessels going to Shanghai or Woosung.
Captain Euan Wallace, Parliamentary Secre tary to the Board of Trade, replied that he was in- formed that underwriters were freely granting war risk insurance on vessels going to these ports and their cargoes, other than war materials.
Insurance on cargo was at present limited to the period during which it was on board ocean- going vessels, but he understood that the under- writers were considering the possibility of assist- ing shipowners by extending the scope of existing
cover.
