In a "provisional balance-sheet of the Far Eastern conflict, drawn up by the Tokyo correspon- dent of the "Frankfurter Zeitung," the conclusion is reached that the resistance offered by the Chin- ese has taken the Japanese by surprise and has up- set their calculations.

The correspondent says that the Japanese themselves admit that the spirit and achievements of the Chinese armies have exceeded all anticipa- tions, and that the successes of the Japanese are neither as rapid or as extensive as had been con- fidently hoped in Tokyo.
