reviews of local art exhibitions ways contain scornful references the indifference of our public. If yon take the trouble to count the number of those who attend the ex- hibitions and the number of pic- tures sold, you must agree that the scorn is not entirely unjustified Year after year a number of artists visit the Colony and brave the al- ready proverbial indifference of the public. So they would, at least for their courage, deserve better treat- ment. If your only aquaintance with art is the "wonderful pictures** of your amateur friend, which works of arts she gives away to her admirers with great enthusiasm. I must tell you the secret; artists (I mean real artists) usually make their living by selling their

In this he succeeds admirably whether the subject is a tropical interior in Guatemala, like No. 11, or some ma jestic views of Hong Kong In- cidentally No. 11, is my favourite. It has colour, very good and ori- ginal composition and, to use a less technical language, it is the sort of picture which cannot fail to tell you HE Undersigned have received the whole story. The background înstructions to sell by Public is a bamboo screen and the ex- terior is so well indicated that you can imagine the sun-drenched landscape. Another favourite of mine is No. 34, entitled "Grass Cutters." Though it is only a small water colour it gives the effect of great dimensions. It would make a splendid mural painting. Of course, you might care more for other pic- tures on the exhibition, and there Hatstands, Chesterfield - Couches are many scenes and types of Cen- and Armchairs, Morroco Leather tral America, Mexico, Hong Kong Armchairs, Teak and Tapestry and China proper. In all the pic- Van-
