The Japanese continue to make spasmodic ef- forts to establish themselves in Pootung but have been met with such severe and accurate machine- gun
fire that all efforts have met with failure. International military experts do not think the Japanese intend to carry out large-scale military operations in Pootung, since the forces, necessary for such a purpose would be out of proportion to any strategic results obtaining.
On the other hand, the Japanese flank could not be seriously threatened from Poôtung, as the warships in the river provide adequate protection.
There is nevertheless a possi-{ bility that the Japanese will at-! tempt to occupy the western part of Pootung, opposite the Bund, in order to remove the danger to the Consulate General and the Idzumo LOTIEN IN CHINESE HANDS
